Aug 29 – Sept 4 Exploration of Dappled Light at Micro-scale

  • Concept: a demonstration of Man vs. Nature or Man learning from Nature
  • Spent endless hours reconfiguring strips of perforated chipboard testing different configuration to find that perfect detail of dappled light
  • Spent minimal time learning Grasshopper, I’ll dive more into it once I have a better understanding of what this project will look like as a whole. Did figure out the set up I need to create the detail I am looking for.
  • Mid review September 6th
    • Light Phenomena, Analysis, Detailed Series, Definition, 1/8″ model, 1″-1′ model, Grasshopper

Sept 5 – Sept 11 Exploration of Dappled Light Mid Review

Review results:

  • Effects that foster collaborative learning
  • + gradient shadows, grey tones, dimensional effect, variation in grid effect, changes to circles
  • + Total noise – ordered complexion – homogeneity
  • Match effect to program
  • - 1/8″ model not working, re-think
  • Items to think about:
    • Thermal difference, creates its own program? spacial engagement, variation in levels of enclosures, attract people to the site from Palm Walk, one consistent and one changes

Sept 12 – Sept 18 Further Exploration of Dappled Light at Macro-scale

  • Now that the phenomena has been defined, the detail has been chosen; now the challenge is to figure out how this will look at the Marco-scale. Using the existing programs / circulation, how can dapple light promote comfortable and appealing out door learning environment? How can the definition, the gradient and the density of dappled light define space use?

A demonstration of man vs nature through dappled light

  • Use the strength and structure of the material
  • Too much direct light, lighting is to entice reading/study area
  • How can the project extend beyond the study area?
  • Too little change, too much change
  • Gradient of lighting to define program and use of space

Sept 15:  I discovered this form by which fits the concept, the site, the program and strongly demonstrates dappled light in a controlled organic form.

Map how your facade functions over a day, a month, a year. (this is shown in the video. unfortunately there was not enough attention brought to this aspect during the review)

 

Max: Hidden order of science; how your structure presents aspects of the physical world.  Eg. James Turell’s Crator and how it reveals its self over 500 years. (Let the perforation have a secret, a code to be solved. Give the perforation meaning and life)

Computer cannot initiate and appreciate. Where you place the boundaries both in the computer program and with regard to what the computer is allowed to produce. (I control what goes into the formula, I control the perimeters and I control their variation, the computer simple gives me a series of perforation results based on my information and I choose the most appropriate. I strive to maintain control over the computer)

Shape space inwhich we behave, how does the facade influence a change to the interior. (The perforation changes depending on the face’s orientation to the sun. Each face has a slight change from the other, allowing more or less direct sunlight into the interior. South draws in more light while the West does not, due to the intense sunlight in the later times of the day)

How does time effect apperance of structure, in material, in change of light. (There is little dependence on reflection within the skins. Weathering of the panels will have little effect to the amount of reflection required. The screens have been designed to be self supporting by undulating and folding) Flange support may cast shadows like a solid structure would (Flange are perforated to keep solid lines from occurring. The concentration will show a slight variance, but will not cause a major impact on the lighting detail such as a solid line) folding method of outer skin may not be enough to support independently. (This is a detail I would have liked to spend more time with, thoughts: structure from above with perforation, larger footing, thicker material)

How could changing components of facade change the effect/affect. (Thoughts: more of visible change of screen to indicate change within. Switch to a more controlled system for a small segment. Add interior solid walls to capture dappled light on a vertical surface, rather than strictly a floor plain.)
